I have personally been through all the above scenarios with my son. Through research I came across an Orton Gillingham method of teaching children to read and write. It is a system that is multisensory. It teaches children from the very basis of phonemic awareness and builds on that with spelling rules and how to break down words when reading and spelling. It is explicit with why words are spelt a certain way and visually stimulates the process of learning.
